Some of you may remember that awesome e-session I did in the desert just outside Las Vegas Nevada back in February.   That was Kelly and Joey where they both reside now.  I just completed editing their 4 day wedding extravaganza and wow, do we have a lot of memories for them to cherish.  Kelly came to me after her distant cousin Baaj had told her about me.  Baaj is one of my best friends for the last 27 years.  He’s the only friend I have that I have known that long.  At first Kelly was worried her cousin was referring his buddy who was dabbling in photography.  Kelly soon contacted me by email after checking out my website.  And soon we met, but sans Joey.  Joey was in Las Vegas, where he lives and works, but is originally from here… and a big Habs fan too by the way.  So I met with just Kelly and we talked about her big wedding day in Calgary and her photography needs.  She told me all about her big plans.  Typical Sikh weddings span over multiple days, with different ceremonies and rich traditions.  Joey did finally make it back to Calgary and we finally met over a nice brunch at Cora’s.

The first day of shooting was Kelly’s mendhi party.  The house was full of women getting their henna done.  The henna is absolutely gorgeous with very intricate detail.  The second day was Kelly’s maayan ceremony where her friends and family all came to prepare for her to be married the next day followed by feasting and dancing.

On the third day we all met up at the Sikh Temple in Springbank just west of Calgary.  We arrived with Kelly and her family and Kelly headed straight upstairs where she would remain until she is the last person to enter the temple.  Alicia Price joined me on this day to second shoot with me.  We hung out with Kelly and her bridesmaids and shot some photos until Joey arrived.  When Joey finally did arrive, things were about to get started.  I really really dig the traditions Sikhs do when the bride’s side of the family lines up on one side and the groom’s family on the other side.  Even though Joey is not Sikh, today he was.  When the 2 families line up on either side it always looks like something is about to go down to me.  I just love the intensity!  After a few passages were spoken the fathers would then meet in the middle and exchange garlands.   Then Joey’s brother and Kelly’s brother would do the same thing.  Once that tradition was done, the next would begin and that was a breakfast for all the guests.  All this was happening while poor Kelly was waiting upstairs all by herself.

The ceremony in the temple would start after breakfast with Joey going in first and paying respects to the temple.  The guests soon filed in and Kelly came in last.  The Sikh ceremony is much longer than your usual church ceremonies.  Unfortunately for me, I don’t understand Punjabi so I can not elaborate what was said, but I am sure it was beautiful religious passages.  After the ceremony, we all headed back out side for lunch.   During lunch, their guests lined up to give them a monetary gift and blessings.

We then headed to Cochrane to do photos of the newlyweds.  It was Canada Day and Cochrane’s main street outside McKay’s Ice Cream store was packed.  I was thinking, oh no, but then I thought to myself, we can really embrace this.  Kelly & Joey were fully dressed in traditional Indian garbs and I knew this would attract a lot of attention here.  And they sure did.  The way they stood out was too great to ignore.  I knew I had to photograph them in front of McKay’s eating ice cream with the rest of the Canada Day celebrators.  They got of looks and compliments and well wishes from every one there.  It was quite the sight.

Day 4 was the reception day.  The reception took place at the Calgary Polish Canadian Cultural Centre.  But before that, we met K&J at the Hotel Art where they were staying.  Today they would look completely different than the day before.  Joey shaved the beard and took off the turban.  Kelly was in an Indian bridal dress that probably made her feel 50 lbs lighter.   We hung out around the Hotel Arts shooting bride and groom portraits of them before we headed up the wedding reception venue in northeast Calgary.

The reception was filled with awesome speeches, dancing and of course food.  Calgary’s newest digital photo booth, Hoot Booth was setup in the lobby for the guests to entertain themselves and create wacky photos for the bride and groom.

What can I say about Kelly & Joey?  I can’t wait for them to come back to Calgary so we can hang out again.  I feel almost kind of sad they live so far away.  My tickets for the Flames vs Habs are yours if you want them Joey!  I got 3, so we can all go together.  I am so happy to be able to say I have friends that live in Las Vegas now.  When ever I am down, I will be calling you guys to take me to Inn-N-Out Burger! :)

The photos posted below are a mix of images from myself and Alicia Price.

But of course there are many traditions that span several days.  This sneak peek here is from their same day slideshow I made for their wedding reception.  I usually don’t put up more than 4 photos for a sneak peek, but we just have a TON of great imagery to share.  So we’ll go with 6 for a sneak peek.  I can’t wait to share the rest.

I had a great time last night with Eryn & Adam.  I was excited all week to have them come in and see their wedding photos, but after last night, I felt like I really got to know them even better.  These 2 are some of the nicest people I have ever met and they are so perfect for each other it’s beyond words.  Eryn & Adam their wedding at the Calgary Zoo.  Both of them are huge animal lovers, so the zoo just made sense.  They both have their obsessions, besides each other.  Eryn is really into Disney and Adam is really into super heroes.  So you just knew how this wedding was going to go down!

Ryan and I started the day with Adam’s groom prep in Harvest Hills in NW Calgary.  When we arrived we started shooting details, and Adam had these super cool Superman cuff links and a Superman pendant.  When he put on the pendant, I knew exactly what shot I wanted.  I am also a HUGE Superman fan, ever since I was little.  I used to dress up as Superman all the time.  What a perfect chance to get one where it looks like he’s about to rip off his shirt to show the logo.  When this image came up on the same day slide show, it got a huge cheer.  Eryn was getting ready at the Delta Hotel in downtown Calgary.  Her room was a buzz with lots of people and wedding day nerves.  We went out to the elevator lobby to take her portraits where the light was just fantastic.

The day threatened us with rain, but with my extremely usual luck of good weather on wedding days, it stayed again once again.  The ceremony was out door on the lawn in front of the  butterfly conservatory at the Calgary Zoo.  But before the ceremony we had time to create some photos, we did just that.  We setup a first look for Eryn and Adam, since we wanted that moment to be special for them, then we were off for the first pre ceremony photos.  After the ceremony we stayed on the zoo grounds to finish up the photos before the reception.

Congratulations Eryn & Adam.  You guys are truly wonderful people and I know you guy will be together forever.  Thank you so much for trusting me with your big day.

Zee and Mark have finally seen their photos and we are ready to share it with the world, literally.  I met Zee and Mark about a year ago at a mutual friend’s BBQ.  That mutual friend was also a client who’s wedding I photographed in the Dominican Republic.  Our mutual friend had told me that Zee and Mark were planning on getting married in Hawaii.  Most people who know me, know that Hawaii is my most favorite place on the planet.  I have always wanted to shoot a wedding in Hawaii, so naturally I had to throw my stick in the pile, hoping they’d want to consider me.  Consider me they did!  Before we even went to Hawaii, I got to know Z&M a little better and they soon felt like a couple friends that I have always known.  Both of them came to Calgary from the UK when Zee got transferred at work, so most of their guest were from the UK.  They even had friends and family from the UAE and Spain.  This was a true destination wedding!

Ryan and I started the day with the boys in the condos at Ka’anapali and soon met up with the ladies at the Westin Maui, where they were getting married.  Once all the prep photos were done, we headed off to the Sheraton Maui for the ceremony.  The ceremony was held outdoors on the lawn in front of the beach on a picture perfect Hawaiian day.  As the nuptial were read, you could hear the waves crash on the shores.  The ceremony was short and very sweet and soon the sun was about to set.   The reception was also held at the Sheraton Maui.  The wedding party came in triumphantly to music but it was Mark’s entrance that stole the show.  He come in swinging like Manny Pacquiao.  It was quite the sight and something I won’t soon forget.  It was a fantastic entrance!  The rest of the night was a party with some tear jerking speeches, crazy dancing and some photo booth fun.

The next day was our creative shoot day.  Ryan and I had already scouted the north shore of Maui the day before the wedding so we knew exactly where we were going to shoot.  Our first location was a grassy area and there we found a spectacular tree.  After that we headed up to the cliffs of the north shore.  It was absolutely SPECTACULAR.  Our timing with the light was great as well and with our luck, some clouds came rolling in for some dramatic scenery.  Zee also mentioned she was to do a trash the dress session as well, so we found a perfect little secluded cove with a tiny beach that was perfect for our shoot.  We were about to make it hot!

Thanks Zee and Mark for inviting Ryan and I to come all the way from Calgary to Hawaii to create your wedding photos for you.  Your destination wedding was something many couples dream about, and in my opinion, it was perfect.  We couldn’t have had a better 2 days shooting you, your friends and family.   Now that everyone is back home in their respective cities around the world, we will always remember and dream of Maui again.

Badr & Feross’ wedding was the very first Arabic wedding we have photographed here in Calgary.  Badr came to Canada from Lebanon to marry her sweetheart Feross.  I have to give her props for making such a huge life decision by leaving all her family behind to come to a foreign country to be with her man.  You know that their love for each other is strong.  Ryan and I didn’t really know what to expect on this day, so when we arrived at Feross’ brother’s home, we walked into a huge gathering of people having fun.  After spending some time there, everyone quickly emptied the home and headed over to where the bride was waiting to be picked up by her groom.   The residents in Applewood were probably wondering where all these people and vehicles came from.  We had about 20 vehicles in a parade all heading to the same location.  It was a quite the scene!

When it came time to shoot our couples portraits, we decided that shooting outside for a little bit was a must.  After all, they were having a winter wedding, and I thought how cool would it be to send some photos back to Lebanon depicting Calgary’s wonderful blustery winter scene.  Badr didn’t have much time to acclimatize to Calgary’s winter but was game with putting up with -20 degree temperatures for a bit.  We went to nearby Ellison Park in S.E. Calgary for some our outdoor photos.  When we were done there we headed downtown to find some warmth and light.

The wedding reception took place at the Commonwealth Centre in N.E. Calgary.  The evening included a TON of traditional Lebanese dancing and music.  There so much energy the whole night it was great!!

Congrats Badr & Feross.  Thanks for having us cover your big wedding day.  Ryan and I had a blast and it was nice to photograph a wedding with so much culture.

Courtney & Geoff have finally seen their wedding photos from their spectacular destination wedding at the Riu in Ocho Rios, Jamaica.  39 of us left Calgary on February 5th headed for sand, sun, fun and of course to witness C&G tropical wedding.  I really liked the fact the ceremony wasn’t until day 5 of the trip.  It really allowed me time to get to know C&G and their friends better.  During those days I really felt a strong connection with C&G.  I knew once we connected, they would trust me and we would create some fabulous images together.

The day started with the girls in the salon getting their hair done.  Once that was complete, I headed up to where the boys were getting ready and got some photos of Geoff and his boys.  When I finished there, I headed over to Courtney’s bridesmaid’s room where the girls were getting ready.  The room was a spectacular suite with a view of the gorgeous, blue and green Caribbean Sea.  The balcony made a for a wicked shooting spot with the sea as my backdrop.

The ceremony was held in typical tropical fashion… on the beach!  Wouldn’t we all love to get married on a beach?  The ceremony was short and very sweet.  It was so fun to shoot with such an amazing backdrop.  It makes my job that much easier.  After shooting some of C&G photos on the beach, we hired a driver to drive us around near the resort.  We stopped at random places as we drove with no particular plan in mind.  I always love doing as it really pushes you to see things quickly.  We got lucky and found a a couple cool spots, including a broken down, deserted building that used to be a bar by the ocean.

Man do I love destinations weddings.  However, it’s really tough to be away from the family for so long, because I always wished they were there with me.   The only 2 people I knew in the whole group was C&G. Even with them, I have maybe spent a total of 4 hours with them, so this trip was kind of nerve racking to me.  Not really knowing anyone, you never know what can happen.  I am so happy to say that I made 38 new friends.  Everyone was really nice and easy to get along with as I expected, because of the way C&G are.  It made missing the family a lot easier.  I was a heck of a week and I am so thankful to have met all the people I did on this trip.

Thanks for trusting me and bringing me a long to Jamaica for your wedding.  It was awesome to spend a week with you guys and get to know you so intimately.  I hope you love your wedding photos as much as I do!
