I am so pumped to finally share with everyone my last wedding of 2012. The year couldn’t have ended on better note. Vendredi (AKA Friday) and Vinh both make me smile. They are one of the nicest and one of the most unique couples I have met. They both share the same interests when it comes to stuff like video games and snowboarding, but the most noticeable interest they have, is their love and respect for each other.
We started the day with a lot of energy with the bridesmaids making the groomsmen do a bunch of silly things, including wear briefs over their pants and dancing to Gangnam Style. It was only after a few other funny games that Vinh was finally allowed to get his bride. After the traditional chinese tea ceremony, we headed down to the First Baptist Church in the beltline. Ryan and I got to the church early to go scout the place out. Wow, this church was huge!! We found a lot of cool nooks and crannies. Good light was hard to find for portraits of Friday and Vinh, but as always, we made it work!
The ceremony was really nice and had a lot of Filipino traditions. The vows were excellent, sweet and really showed who these 2 really are. After they sealed their kiss, Friday & Vinh came back up the aisle dancing away. At this point, I realized the day would be full of silliness, as if the day didn’t start off silly enough! I was laughing the whole time I was shooting and at the same time I was yelling at Vinh to move out of the way, because we was completely blocking Friday. We had to see to her moves too!
It was a bit of a chilly day on this November afternoon. We did some photos outside and then soon we were looking for a place to warm up. We had planned to shoot on the Peace Bridge for sure, but we needed an indoor location as well. Friday & Vinh suggested a little place called Jelly Modern Doughnuts. I had never been there before, but they told me their maple bacon donut was amazing. We had to go there now, not just to shoot, but also to eat some donuts! The staff here were very accommodating to us. Maybe the recognized them as regulars. We got some really good stuff inside and then it was time to bear the cold and head to the Peace Bridge. This was the first time I had shot wedding photos on the bridge. About time if you ask me!
The silliness continued at the reception with their entrances. The rest of the evening was pretty much the same. Lots of laughs, some tears and more laughs!
Congrats Friday & Vinh. Thank you so much for having Ryan and I be a part of your day. You both are amazing human beings. You guys are the reason why I love what I do..

Christina and Justin got married in October and I can finally share their wedding photos. We started the day at their house where Justin was getting ready with his groomsmen and then we headed off to see Christina and her bridesmaids. When we arrived at her parents house, there was a definite buzz going on. The girls were still getting their final touches done before Christina finally slipped into her wedding dress. She looked amazing with her birdcage veil and purple shoes and I think the images prove that!
The ceremony took place at the Hotel Arts, in downtown Calgary. The ceremony was filled with friends and family. They both shed tears of joy when they heard each other’s vows. After the ceremony, Christina and Justin wanted to head back to their old stomping grounds at Western Canada High School, where most if not all, of the wedding party attended high school. I never thought about doing photos at a couple’s old high school before, so this was different. It worked out really good for us. Western Canada is a very old school. In fact, it was completed before Alberta was officially a province of Canada. The location provided us with many cool backdrops for their photos. Afterwards, we stuck around downtown before heading back to the Hotel Arts, where we had time to shoot even more photos of the love birds.
When we enter the dining room, where the reception was held, the first thing Ryan and I noticed was the huge candy car. There were full size chocolate bars and packs of gum!! The room looked very elegant with soft purple lighting to set the mood. The night was full of fun games, including some that we haven’t seen before. There was also an awesome Chinese lion dance at the beginning of the night, that set the tone for the rest of the evening.
Christina & Justin. Thank you for choosing me out of the ocean of photographers out there. Ryan and I had a super good time creating all these memories for you guys. You guys are perfect for each other and I know you will enjoy, these images we that made, for the rest of your lives. Don’t be a stranger!! Anytime I am downtown, I will definitely swing by Gem by Carati to visit you Justin!!

From the minute I met Trisha and Mike, I felt we connected. I knew that these 2 were going to be fun to work with and they definitely were! We started at Trish’s parents house for the door games and tea ceremony. The boys were hoping that some McDonald’s breakfast food would get them in the door, but the bridesmaids had other plans. After eating some ginger, durian and doing some other things, the boys were also forced to do 100 push ups. When Mike did finally get in, he still had to serenade his bride.
The ceremony took place at the Delta Bow Valley in downtown Calgary. The ceremony was short and sweet. After that we stayed downtown to do our portraits before heading over the Regency Palace for reception madness. I had a feeling this night was going to be a fun night with the way the wedding party and the couple entered the reception. The evening had plenty of fun games and a magician MC who entertained everyone. With our Hoot Booth there, it made it even more crazier and memorable.
Congrats Trisha and Mike!!! You guys are an awesome couple! You were great to work with and it was a pleasure to get to know you both. I will definitely hit you guys in Edmonton when I am there so we can hang out in a less formal situation.

Lily and Joe have finally seen their wedding photos and we can finally share some images of their wedding on the blog. Lily & Joe had their wedding at the Calgary Zoo. The ceremony was outdoors and even though thundershowers were in the forecast “Johnny Sunshine” (a nickname given to me by a few of my wedding photographer friends) struck again. In case some of you didn’t know, I have never had a wedding rain on me in my whole career! Today was another such example. Lily & Joe had their ceremony right before the reception, so that meant we had to get first look photos! Before that happened though, Ryan and I split for only the second time ever. Ryan went to meet up with Joe for his prep photos, while I shot the girls getting ready.
We stayed in the area around the Hotel Arts where Lily was getting ready for their photos. We shot most of their portraits down there as well as the wedding party photos. When it was almost time for the ceremony, we all headed to the Calgary Zoo. The ceremony was a really nice one on this day with lots of family and friends on hand to witness their nuptials. The reception was one fun party with many Hoot Booth photos to attest to that.
The wedding was planned by the amazing Sonia Ulmer from Enriched Events, who did a fantastic job! It was a pleasure to meet and work with the first time, videographer Aydin Odyakmaz from Aydin Productions.
Congrats Lily & Joe! It was a huge honor to have been a big part of your day. It was great to get to know you both and hopefully we will be able to get to know each other even better.

Aminder & Jatinder had an amazing 3 day wedding celebration full of traditions, food, color, emotions, energy and lots of family. I love photographing Sikh weddings here in Calgary. I have many friends who are Sikh so, even though I may stick out a bit, I always feel welcomed and feel like I am a part of the family. After 3 days, I kind of wished there was more, because I actually start to miss all the people I had met.
The first day was Aminder’s henna day and it was quite calm. It was the second day where things got more fired up. What I experienced could probably be best described as a song battle in the street. Kind of like a rap battle if you know what I mean. It was very, very fun to watch even though I didn’t understand a thing. Some of the words were translated to me later and they were much more “aggressive” than I thought it would be. But not in a bad way at all. After many of the different traditional nuances that day, we had the big wedding day to look forward to the next day.
The Gurdwara is a place of worship for the Sikhs. Everyone and anyone is always welcomed, no matter what religion you practice or the color of your skin. The best part is they will always feed you too. The ceremony was traditional as usual with hundreds, if not thousands of photos, shot between Ryan and I. Once the ceremony was complete, Aminder and Jatinder were whisked away in a beautiful old school Rolls Royce. We headed to downtown Calgary to photograph the wedding portraits.
When we got back to Aminder’s house, they groom and the groomsmen had to pay their way into the house for the official ring ceremony. This is also the ceremony where the bride’s parents give her away to the groom. But before they could get in, there would be some negotiation. The bridemaids did not really let up from their asking price that was over $10,000. When negotiations turned sour and the boys had enough, they attacked the girls with silly string, but the girls had answer for that. It was quite crazy and it was the first time I had experienced something so crazy! My camera got splashed with water too. Good thing Nikon’s pro bodies are weather sealed. Eventually the boys had to pay serveral thousand dollars to the ladies, who then split it with all of the girls in Aminder’s family.
The reception took place at the Magnolia in NE Calgary. The most memorable moment was when Aminder’s little brother could not contain his emotions of his sister departing the family home to live with Jatinder in Seattle.
Aminder and Jatinder, thank you so much for having me be a part of your big wedding celebration. It was a true honor and a great experience. I really felt like part of your family after 3 days and everyone treated us so well. We couldn’t have asked for better clients with better families than yours. Good luck in Seattle and don’t drink too much Starbucks.
