Meet Kate and Roy.  Kate and Roy were the last couple to book for 2010 for their wedding in October.  I was excited when I first met them because they are obviously a good looking couple and stylish as well.  I was ecstatic when they chose me as their wedding photographer.  I was really looking forward to shooting their e-session in downtown Calgary since they booked.  They definitely didn’t disappoint when they showed up.  They both looked good and ready to work the camera for me.  We had fun just walking around downtown looking for opportunities to make cool photos.  Without further ado, here are Kate and Roy.

Jennifer & Paul 05.29.10.| Calgary Wedding Photographers

Jenn and Paul have finally seen their wedding photos and I am now ready to share with all of you.  But first a little history.  Paul and I are very good friends.  We first met back in 2001 when we each had our own eBay business.  One thing led to another and we ended up [...]

Jenn and Paul have finally seen their wedding photos and I am now ready to share with all of you.  But first a little history.  Paul and I are very good friends.  We first met back in 2001 when we each had our own eBay business.  One thing led to another and we ended up merging our businesses to form Custom Auto.  We sold sold car parts online out of Paul’s apartment for a good part of the year.  We were sending hundreds maybe a thousand orders every month out of his apartment.  Business was exploding.  We finally decided it was time to move out of his apartment and rent a warehouse after this huge windfall.

Fast forward a few years later, and that when I got hooked on photography.  I saved up money to buy some studio lighting so I could play with it and learn some more.  Good ol’ Paul was my VERY FIRST subject I ever shot on my camera with my new Alien Bees Lighting system.  I had setup a faux studio upstairs in our car shop.  I asked Paul to sit and be my model as I tried to figure out how to use my lights.  Paul was more than happy to be my model. as I tried to give him a little direction.  After my very first shoot with him, he took a look at the photos and really liked them.   He liked them so much, he used it as his profile picture on the dating website where he was a member.  Now all these girls were looking at a hot stud with a “semi professional” looking profile picture!  You are probably wondering where this is all going…. well, Jenn was also a member and she noticed Paul’s profile picture. During Jenn’s speech at the wedding,  she said “when I saw Paul’s profile picture, I knew this was the man I am going to marry.”  And that’s how they met!  And now here they are…. married. I still have no idea how Jenn knew from that one photos we shot for fun that this was her future husband.  It’s one of those destiny things.

Words can not express how happy I am for both Paul and Jenn.  Knowing what kind of man Paul is, I know for a fact that he is a great catch for Jenn.  If there is one person who I could always depend on when I needed a favor, it was Paul, he just never said no.  Whether it was to fix my car starter or help me build a fence, he always showed up with his tools ready to go.  I can not say that for anyone else that I know in my life.  When his best man, Brad, did his speech he echoed the exact same things.   I just stood there and nodded in agreement with a huge smile on my face.   It wasn’t just me that he was there for all the time, he was always there for his friends and family as well.  It’s just the kind of guy he is.

It was a huge honor to photograph Jenn & Paul’s wedding.  I even said back then when I first shot photos of him, that I will shoot his wedding one day.  And here we are 6 years later, with me posting photos of Paul and his new gorgeous wife, Jenn, on my blog.

Congratulations once again guys.  Of all the weddings that I have shot, yours no doubt will always be special to me.

We had an awesome time doing their engagement photos down by the Elbow River near downtown Calgary.  We found some interesting places to stop and shoot some photos.  Afterwards we ventured over to warehouse district to shoot some more and ended up at the Arriva building as the weather started to turn on us.  The security guard there graciously allowed us to shoot inside the building.

Their wedding is at the end of June and from the sounds of it, it’s going to be one heck of a celebration!

Christina and Lenny came to me in September about photography for their wedding that was going to be held in Toronto.  Unfortunately for them, I was already booked for their date.  They both are Torontonian transplants who haven’t been in Calgary for very long.  Their first impressions of Calgarians was that we are super friendly.  Too friendly to the point they weren’t sure if people were just faking it not.  After a 1 and a half years here, they now know that we are truly super friendly.  It’s just the way it is here out west.

Because I couldn’t do their wedding photography, Christina came back to me and asked if we could do an engagement session around Calgary.  I was more than happy to do something for them.  They mostly loved of my fashion inspired work, so I told them we could shoot somewhere unique instead of inside Calgary.  At first they wanted to head west towards the mountains, but I suggested we head east to the badlands instead.  Of course they were both up for that.  Christina asked me what they should wear and I said “just look pimp”.   Needless to say, they showed up really pimped out and I couldn’t wait to get started.

I wish you both an awesome wedding in Toronto.  I really wished I could have been a part of it, but I am still glad you wanted to do a session with me, otherwise we never would have met.  You both are an awesome couple and I know your big day is going to be amazing.  Congrats on your upcoming wedding.  I hope you love your photos as much as I loved making them for you!  Don’t be a stranger!

Michelle and Shaun decided to stay in the Bahamas for their honeymoon for 3 weeks!!  Lucky ducks!  I don’t blame them at all for not wanting to be in Calgary in the middle of winter.  When they did come back, we were finally able to get together to see their wedding photos.  Michelle told me she had not seen any photos from their wedding yet, even from their guests.  I was more than thrilled that my photos were the first ones they would see.  I had to get some tissue ready for Michelle.  Love it when that happens.

Michelle and Shaun had their ceremony in the amazing St. Mary’s Cathedral close to downtown Calgary.  I have never shot inside this church before but heard so many good things about it.  As soon as I walked in, I looked over at Alicia and said “right on”.  There was tons of natural light flooding in from everywhere and the ceiling was just plain awesome.  It’s definitely one of the nicer churches in Calgary.  The ceremony was a wonderful ceremony attended by many family and close friends.

Once the ceremony was over, Alicia and I decided we would shoot some of our creative portraits right inside the church.  It was a setting that had to be taken advantage of.  Afterwards, we headed to the Calgary Petroleum Club in downtown Calgary.  We shot as many photos as we could without freezing.  The windchill on this day was just bitter cold.  The Petroleum Club was also a great setting for me to finish of our portraits as Alicia went off and shot wicked details photos of the club.

Alicia Price assisted me on this wedding as Ryan was away on a destination wedding of his own in Mexico.

Thanks, Michelle and Shaun, for trusting us with your special day.  I am very lucky to have met such a beautiful couple like yourselves.  You both are the reason why I love my job so much.  You were so easy to work with because it’s obvious how much you both love and respect each other.  I would love to go to another Flames game with you guys before the little one arrives and takes up all your time.  What an huge year 2010 is going to be for you both.  I am so blessed to have been the one chosen to photograph and create these memories for you for the rest of your lives.  I can’t wait to meet the little “mini me”.  Congrats again!!

I am back from WPPI in Las Vegas after 7 long days, which is about 3 days too long for Las Vegas. My body is tired from all the parties we went to, but like last year, it was an awesome experience. This year I met even more photographers and made more friends from all over the world. I am so lucky to be able to do what I do and have the experiences I do. There was quite a large contingent of Calgary Photographers in Vegas this year. At last count I think there were at least 20 of us down there that I know of. I love how our community is so tight knit and we all support each other to the fullest. We may be “competitors”, but we are all friends as well.

I learned even more this year about the art of wedding photography and can’t wait to implement all this for all my couples in Calgary, Edmonton and Banff. My 2010 couples are in for a real treat and I can’t wait to see what this year brings. I will be looking out for opportunities to create some amazing images this year, so be prepared brides and grooms!

As most of you faithful blog readers know, I entered 8 images into the WPPI Annual Awards of Excellence print competition. Of the 8 I entered, 2 of them scored an accolade of excellence. A few other scored only 1 or 2 points from being awarded an accolade. The 2 that did score hung in the gallery next to hundreds of some the most inspiring and most incredible images created in 2009, by some of the best photographers in the world. I was more than honored to be there along side them. Without further ado, here are the 2 images that are now award winning images.

2009 was an amazing year personally for me and for JT Images.  We had the honour of photographing 21 weddings and also did 2 trash the dress and a day after wedding session.  We shot weddings in Calgary, Edmonton, Banff and Red Deer.  Somewhere in there I also did 15 engagement sessions.  On top of that, I hosted my own “Just to Inspire” wedding photography workshop for the first time ever, here in Calgary.  All of this wouldn’t have been possible without the support of my family and friends, and especially Ryan, who assisted me on 95% of the weddings.  Muchos gracias, mi amigo!

My biggest thanks goes out to all my wonderful and amazing clients.  I am truly honoured to have been chosen to photograph such an important event in your lives and to be a part of it.  I really hope you will cherish all the wonderful images we made together, for all eternity.  I know I will!

Once I finished the last wedding of the season, I couldn’t wait to get started on my yearbook and this slide show.  My book hasn’t arrived yet, but when it does, I’ll be sure to share that with you all.  But for now, here are the images that made it in the book in a slide show presentation.  It was hard to narrow it down to 140 images, out the tens of thousands that I shot last year, but I did it.  Well, what are you waiting for???  Hit play!
