Sophia & Mandeep were the last couples of 2011 for us.  And what a way for us to end off a great year.  Sophia booked me a long time ago with what was only supposed to be an engagement session.  But once she had a date and venue, she asked me to photograph her calgary wedding as well.  Sophia and Mandeep had their wedding ceremony at the Calgary Wedding Pavilion, but before that, we met up with Sophie and her bridesmaids at the Four Points Sheraton for her prep.  When we arrived at the Calgary Wedding Pavilion, Sophia headed straight up to the bridal suite where we did her portraits while Mandeep was downstairs waiting for his moment.

Once the ceremony was complete we headed downtown first to photograph the bridal party.  We were even offered the use of an art gallery nearby for a few shots.  Once we completed all the group photos, it was time to whisk them away to a few spots I had scouted out the day before.  Sophia and Mandeep were troopers, willing to do pretty much anything I asked of them.  They gave us A LOT of time to shoot before their reception and what resulted was a ton of wicked imagery.  We headed to the Carriage House Inn on McLeod Trail in south Calgary for their wedding reception.  When I entered their venue I was in awe.  It was absolutely beautiful.  The drapes were wonderful, lighting incredible and the style was a perfect match for Sophia & Mandeep’s personalities.   They had a lounge area setup that had a night club ambience to it.  There, people were lining up to try their signature shooters, which were poured through a huge shot ice luge that had their initials and date etched in it.  The wait staff walked around with Indian hor dourves, that we couldn’t get enough of.  The reception setup was one of the top 3 nicest we have seen this year.    Dinner was absolutely fantastic and so were the speeches.  Once all the formalities were done, it was party time and let me tell you…. these guys love to party!!

Thanks M&S!!  Ryan and I really felt we got to know you guys well, after spending a whole day with you.  I could really tell you both are really into each other and it was a real honor to have been a part of your big day.  I hope we will stay in touch and maybe one day we can party together!

Tara and Julien had a destination wedding in Calgary…. well, not really.  They both live and work in Fort MacMurray, but decided to have their Indian wedding here in Calgary.  Their wedding was a very fun one.  I have never seen a groomsmen party more tight than these guys.  As soon as I started with them you could tell something was different.  They were all the same.  Happy, excited for Julien and loud.  Usually wedding parties are mixed with people from different groups of friends.  But these guys were all friends from childhood and all grew up together.   It was wild just hanging out with them and watching all the shenanigans.  As usual we started the wedding photography coverage with the groom, Julien, and his boys at Hilton Garden Inn in northeast Calgary.  Tara and her girls were also there, but on different floors, so we got to spend a lot of time shooting both parties.

The ceremony and reception were held at The Magnolia in NE Calgary.  The ceremony was a traditional Hindu ceremony.  I love the Hindu traditions. Julien arrived with his boys to beating drums and dance.  Soon after his feet were washed before he entered the Magnolia.  Tara came in with even more style while being carried by 4 men in a decked out Indian litter.  The words that are spoken during the ceremony are very poetic.  Throughout the ceremony, the priest always explained all the different customs and why it was done that way.  It really is very beautiful and spiritual.

During our pre wedding meeting, Julien asked if it was possible to have some pictures of him and his groomsmen playing basketball.  They are all huge basketball fans so he thought this would be fun and quite personal for them.  Of course I was more than happy to oblige.  We headed to one of Calgary’s newest neighborhoods, Skyview Ranch, where I found a basketball court and a cool location for some photos.  It had rained earlier during the day so we had a lot of puddles everywhere.  Sometimes you just gotta take advantage of what’s been given to you and make the best out of it.  We definitely used the puddles and made a lot of reflection shots!

Congrats Tara & Julien!  I finally know someone who lives in Ft. Mac!  You guys are the picture perfect couple and a huge pleasure to work with.  I hope our paths cross again soon so we can catch up.  Stay warm!

Susan & Dobby had their wedding here in Calgary in September. I still remember they first time when they walked into my house for their wedding photography consultation. I remember thinking, wow, they look so young… and then it made me feel old. In fact Dobby is good friends with my cousin, who was one of his groomsmen. These 2 are one of those couples when you meet, you just know that they totally belong together.

We started off this day with quite a lot of laughs. When Dobby and his boys showed up to Susan’s house, they were forced to do things by the girls that could only be described as mean, but in a good way. First off they had to wear some depends diapers, which of course made them look absolutely silly. And then they were given a giant candy ring and were made to dance to Beyonce’s, “put a ring on it”. After that, they had to eat mystery ice cubes. I can not describe how they tasted but the photos are worth a million words.

They had the traditional Chinese tea ceremony at both homes. The wedding ceremony was held at the Wedding Pavillion just off of 16th Ave in northwest Calgary. It was there we did Susan’s getting ready photos in the bridal suite. After the ceremony, we took photos inside the Pavillion. We took advantage of every corner of the pavillion before heading out to Bowness to photograph their wedding party.

Susan and Dobby also have a dog that they dearly love. We all headed out together to pick up their dog at the dog sitter because they wanted a few photos of them with their dog. Their dog was extremely happy to see them!

The wedding reception was held at the Regency Palace in Calgary’s Chinatown. The rest of the night was quite the party with all their friends celebrating the first wedding of their young group.

Congrats Susan & Dobby! You guys are a great example to your friends and everybody around you. You both express love and respect for each other without holding anything back. You both will be a true inspiration for all. Thank you for trusting Ryan and I with your big day. See you at the Dome.  ;)

Terri and Ronny got married at the Hotel Arts in downtown Calgary in August.  I first met Terri and Ronny at another wedding in Edmonton where I was the photograper.  But of course we really didn’t get to know each other until they had hired me.  Ronny is originally from Edmonton.  Back in the day him and my sister were actually friends but I never knew him then.  Terri is from here in Calgary.  It seems that I have met a lot of couples where one half is from Edmonton, and the other is from Calgary.  Even my relationship with my wife is like that.  When T&R came to me, I felt an immediate connection with them.   I was almost like I have always known them. We all have lot of the same interests.  Ronny is a huge Oiler’s fan unfortunately, but it does make for good trash talking.

We started the day with the traditional Chinese tea ceremony at Terri’s house and then at Ronny’s.  The games that the girls made the boys play before they were allowed to see Terri was rowdy!  Lots of shooters (and this was in the morning) and lap dancing!  When both tea ceremonies were done, it was time for Terri to put on her white dress, and WOW! She looked absolutely stunning!  Her dress was amazing and totally suited her style and look.  She wore that dress like a supermodel.  I must admit it was so easy photographing her.  Ronny looked handsome in his suit and it was also very easy to photograph him.  He’s got some serious style. He’s the first ever groom I have ever had who wore a bow tie!

Afterwards we headed to the Hotel Arts to do some photos there with the wedding party.  I then took Terri & Ronny on a little drive to go create some awesome photos of them.  These 2 worked the camera like pros and the results speak for themselves.  We stayed close to downtown because we had to head back to the Hotel Arts for their wedding ceremony.  After the ceremony it was reception time.

Thank you Terri & Ronny for trusting Ryan and I with your big day.   It was an absolute honor and pleasure to have gotten to know you both.  I can’t wait for next year’s NHL playoff pool.

Lisa & Jordan had their wedding at the Valley Ridge Golf Course in NW Calgary in July.  My good friend and photographer, Alicia Price, came out and helped me cover their wedding.  We started the day at Jordan and Lisa’s house in Copperfield.  There we photographed Jordan and his groomsmen getting ready.  Soon after that we headed over to the new and luxurious Hotel Le Germain, in downtown Calgary.  When we arrived, we entered a suite that was buzzing excitement.  All of Lisa’s bridesmaids were there and so was her mother.  The suite was a beautiful room, which helped make my job a lot easier.

The wedding coverage on this day wouldn’t be the traditional kind of coverage that we were used to.  Instead, the wedding ceremony was right before the wedding reception at the golf course, so that meant all the photos would happen before the ceremony.  I asked Lisa & Jordan in advanced, what they thought of doing a first look.  They loved the idea, so when Jordan and his boys arrived, it was time to get it on.  We used the back alley behind the Hotel Le Germain for the first look.  We set them up and then let them do their thing.  The photos we captured say it all.

We hung around downtown Calgary and the hotel for all of their creative wedding photos.  We didn’t have to go far at all to find inspiration.

The weather was perfect all day and it was not any different when we got to the Valley Ridge Golf Course.  The wedding ceremony was held outside.

Congratulations L&J!  I am honored to have been the one to create these photos for you.  I really believe some of the photos we made are quite emotionally powerful.  It really shows your intense love for each other.  Good luck in Kamloops, Lisa!

The first time I met Maya & Zaafir, it was on skype.  Maya & Zaafir live in Palo Alto, CA where they both attended Stanford University, but they originally met at Princeton University.  Zaafir is from here in Calgary and Maya was born in Kentucky in the U.S.  They decided to have their wedding here in Calgary at the Sheraton Eau Claire.   I immediately liked them when we had our video chat and couldn’t wait to meet them.  The second time we met was for their e-session in Kananaskis.  Their connection with each other during that session made my job really easy.  I knew that on the wedding day it wouldn’t be hard to get great photos of them.  On this day I had my friend Alicia Price come out and help me shoot M&Z’s wedding.

The wedding was a grand fusion of Hindu and Ismaili traditions.  The day started with Maya getting ready for their Hindu ceremony, which was first.  Maya was adorned in a traditional Indian sari and lots of gold.   Alicia stayed with Maya while I went downstairs to meet up with Zaafir and do his getting ready photos.  Once they were done getting ready, we did the first look in the sky walk that was attached to the Sheraton Eau Claire.  I love doing first looks!  After the first look it was time for the traditional Hindu ceremony.  Once the ceremony was completed we went and did photos of M&Z around the Sheraton before heading back up to the hotel room to get ready for the Ismaili part of the day.  We did more getting ready photos of M&Z, but this one was more traditional when it comes to North American weddings.  Maya slipped into her beautiful wedding dress and we had a ball photographing her.  She looked absolutely beautiful and cameras were clicking away like crazy.  Once they were ready, we did another first look so Zaafir could see Maya in her white dress.  We immediately went and shot more photos of the couple afterwards and then met up with their wedding party.

Thank you Maya & Zaafir for your trust on your big day.  We really feel honored to have been a part of your wedding.  We really loved your connection with each other and we’re so proud of the photos we have created for you.  I wish you all the best and please do let me know when you are back in town so we can hang out again.  I will do the same if I am ever in San Francisco. :)
