JT Images brings home 2 Accolades of Excellence from WPPI.

I am back from WPPI in Las Vegas after 7 long days, which is about 3 days too long for Las Vegas. My body is tired from all the parties we went to, but like last year, it was an awesome experience. This year I met even more photographers and made more friends from all over the world. I am so lucky to be able to do what I do and have the experiences I do. There was quite a large contingent of Calgary Photographers in Vegas this year. At last count I think there were at least 20 of us down there that I know of. I love how our community is so tight knit and we all support each other to the fullest. We may be “competitors”, but we are all friends as well.

I learned even more this year about the art of wedding photography and can’t wait to implement all this for all my couples in Calgary, Edmonton and Banff. My 2010 couples are in for a real treat and I can’t wait to see what this year brings. I will be looking out for opportunities to create some amazing images this year, so be prepared brides and grooms!

As most of you faithful blog readers know, I entered 8 images into the WPPI Annual Awards of Excellence print competition. Of the 8 I entered, 2 of them scored an accolade of excellence. A few other scored only 1 or 2 points from being awarded an accolade. The 2 that did score hung in the gallery next to hundreds of some the most inspiring and most incredible images created in 2009, by some of the best photographers in the world. I was more than honored to be there along side them. Without further ado, here are the 2 images that are now award winning images.

Tuyet & Richard – Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic | Destination Wedding Photographer

Tuyet & Rick booked me for what seemed like a long time ago.  Their original plans were to get married here in Calgary last June.  But they both decided maybe a destination wedding was going to be more fun, so plans were made to have the wedding in Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic.  When they alerted me of the changes, they said “don’t worry, Johnny, you’re our photographer, so we’re bringing you with us!”  My first destination wedding!!  I was stoked obviously.  I was so excited it was Tuyet and Rick, that I was doing destination wedding photography for.  We get along like we were old friends so I knew I would really enjoy my week with them, their friends/family and their 2 kids Jada and Anthony.

There were 26 of us and we stayed at the beautiful and relaxing Grand Oasis Marien.  The resort was clean and well kept.  The staff were super friendly and locals were very welcoming.  Of course drinks were included and as always, the first night was the binge night!  Tuyet & Rick and their friends can drink and drink lots! The whole week I spent with them was a blast and I really got to know everyone on the trip very well.  I am sure we will all stay in touch and hopefully have some sort of reunion, because I already miss them all!

Thank you so much T&R for bringing me to the Dominican Republic to capture your incredible wedding.  I had an amazing experience that I will never forget and I am so honored to call you guys friends and not just clients.

JT Images Best of 2009 | Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer and Banff Wedding Photography

2009 was an amazing year personally for me and for JT Images.  We had the honour of photographing 21 weddings and also did 2 trash the dress and a day after wedding session.  We shot weddings in Calgary, Edmonton, Banff and Red Deer.  Somewhere in there I also did 15 engagement sessions.  On top of that, I hosted my own “Just to Inspire” wedding photography workshop for the first time ever, here in Calgary.  All of this wouldn’t have been possible without the support of my family and friends, and especially Ryan, who assisted me on 95% of the weddings.  Muchos gracias, mi amigo!

My biggest thanks goes out to all my wonderful and amazing clients.  I am truly honoured to have been chosen to photograph such an important event in your lives and to be a part of it.  I really hope you will cherish all the wonderful images we made together, for all eternity.  I know I will!

Once I finished the last wedding of the season, I couldn’t wait to get started on my yearbook and this slide show.  My book hasn’t arrived yet, but when it does, I’ll be sure to share that with you all.  But for now, here are the images that made it in the book in a slide show presentation.  It was hard to narrow it down to 140 images, out the tens of thousands that I shot last year, but I did it.  Well, what are you waiting for???  Hit play!

Michelle & Shaun – Sneak Peek – Calgary Petroleum Club

As soon as I got back from my destination wedding in the Dominican Republic, I had to prepare to photograph Michelle and Shaun’s wedding.  Michelle and Shaun booked me not too long ago and when we first met, we clicked immediate.  It also helped they are both huge Calgary Flames fans.  But what really helped was that they are one of the most down to earth people I have had the pleasure of meeting.  They are both soooooo in love with each other and I can’t wait to finish the rest of their images.  They are off to the beautiful Bahamas for their well deserved honeymoon and when they get back I will put up more photos from their wedding here in Calgary.  There are soooo many good ones, and I can’t wait to share.  Shaun emailed me yesterday asking if there would be a sneak peek soon.  Of course I have to tease you guys!

Have a great honeymoon!  See you when you get back!

Tuyet & Richard’s Dominican Republic Destination Wedding – Sneak Peek

It sure was nice to get away from Calgary for a week to photograph a wedding in the tropics!  Tuyet and Richard brought me to the Dominican Republic with 25 of their closest friends for an amazing week.  I love my job.  More on the craziness that was Puerto Plata later this month.  For now, enjoy these 3 awesome sneak peek photos.  I have a ton of stuff amazing photographs for Tuyet and Richard!  I can’t wait to share them.

Introducing Katie & Cole – Calgary Olympic Plaza Engagement Session

It seems forever now since I met Katie and Cole.  In fact they were one of my first 2010 couples that booked last year.  Katie used to figure skate and Cole plays hockey…. Johnny loves hockey too!  What better place can we go to do our engagement photos, than at the historic Olympic Plaza in downtown Calgary?  We started off shooting in around the Calgary City Hall area before made our way over to Olympic Plaza.  You won’t see these 2 again on the blog until August when they finally get married!

Meaghan & Craig – Calgary Golf and Country Club

Meaghan and Craig are two people who are so much in love with each other.  Ever since Meaghan was a little girl, she always knew she wanted to get married around Christmas time.  Christmas was definitely M&C’s favorite time of year and it provided a spectacular feel to their winter wedding.

The day started at Craig and Meaghan’s house, where Craig has been living alone since they bought the place.  All of Craig’s boys were there getting ready and we had some fun photographing them.  The house was still a bit empty, which was a good thing for us wedding photographers.  Afterwards, we went to Meaghan’s parent’s house where we found the girls getting ready.  You could tell Meaghan’s mom was very excited when she was tying up Meaghan’s dress.  I don’t believe I ever stopped seeing her smile the whole time we were there.

The ceremony as held at the beautiful St. Barnabus Church near downtown Calgary.  St. Barbabus has awesome architecture inside and wonderful amounts of natural light flooding in.  Ryan and I took every advantage of that on this day.  The ceremony was lively and full of energy, as expected with M&C.  When it came time for the vows, Craig got down on one knee in front of his bride, which drew a permanent smile of Meaghan’s face and all the friends and family who came to witness.

It was almost already dark by the time the ceremony was over, as this day was the second shortest day of the year.  We headed down to Olympic Plaza in downtown Calgary to do our photos and shot around Calgary’s City Hall.  The reception was at the Calgary Golf and Country club, which was an amazing high end venue, with Christmas decorations everywhere.  A perfect setting and ending to M&C’s Christmas wedding.

Congratulations M&C.  You both were truly meant for each other.  I feel very blessed to be the one who was chosen to create memories for the both of you.  I wish you all the best and nothing less.

Crystal & Ali – Calgary Lougheed House

Crystal and Ali have finally seen their wedding photos and now we can share it with everyone.  Their wedding took place back on December 12th when it was -35 degrees outside (brrrrr).  The wedding was held at the Lougheed House blocks away from downtown Calgary.  The ceremony and reception were also held here.  We started the day off at the Crystal’s house while she was getting hair and makeup done.  After we finished shooting the details, we ventured off to the Sheraton Eau Claire, where we met up with Ali and his boys.  We did our prep and a few of the shots of the boys at the hotel.

This was the first time we had ever photographed a wedding inside the Lougheed House.  By the time the ceremony started it was already dark outside.  So we had to setup an off camera flash in the corner of the room for our light source.   Once it was time for portraits, we busted out more flash heads and video light.  This was the first wedding I ever shot where I didn’t have available light for the portraits, and the results were perfect.  We used almost every nook and cranny for our portraits and even ventured outside for about 10 mins, right before my fingers were about to fall off.

Congrats Crystal and Ali!  I am ecstatic you love your photos.  I wish you a long and happy life together!

Cailtin & Connor – Fairmont Palliser Hotel

Caitlin & Connor had one of the most different weddings I have ever attended.  It was so well done.  The day started with Ryan and I meeting the boys at Razor’s Edge Barber Shoppe, down in Bonavista Square.  They were getting shaven with a blade!  I have never had one before, but after seeing it, I wouldn’t mind trying.  Although I admit it looks a little scary with a razor sharp blade so close to your throat.  Afterwards, we headed to the Fairmont Palliser Hotel in downtown Calgary.  We jumped from room to room shooting both Connor and Caitlin.  The ceremony took place in the CPR Pavillion which hangs over 1st Street SW.  The ceremony was a low light affair with an awesome ambiance to it.  After a short and very sweet ceremony, it was time to go make some photos.  We ran around the hotel and the adjacent Calgary Tower area to create our shots.  We had a great time and C&C were troopers allowing me to do almost whatever I wanted with them.

The reception was wonderful and took place in the same CPR Pavillion.  Usually when you attend a wedding, there is a guest book to be signed.  Well, instead of having a guest book, C&C had a genuine Polaroid camera, stocked with film for guest to take photos of themselves and sign the Polaroid.   Talk about awesome.  There were no seating arrangements or a dinner.  Instead of tables, they had the venue tastefully decorated in black and white sofa chairs and chaises.  It was an atmosphere that screamed “have fun, this is a party not a formal dinner”.  It was very unique and different and these two pulled it off without a hitch.   The hors d’oeurves that were served were INCREDIBLE!  I have never had lamb so tender that it melted in my mouth.

Congrats Caitlin & Connor.  I wish you both luck, happiness and hope all your dreams come true for you, now that you are leaving Calgary.  Washington D.C. is a different world, but I am sure you both will be fine, because you got each other.  You guys are amazing people and have a connection with each other that is so rare.  I know you both will be successful.  Thank you again for having Ryan and I capture your amazing day.

2009 was amazing! 2010 is shaping up to be even better.

I have been told I need to blog more often, and basically I agree.  I don’t blog as often as I want to, because, well…. my writing sucks and sometimes I just don’t know what to write about that pertains to my work.  But I know it’s going to be good for my rank on google and also to keep my faithful followers and fans interested in me.  I have tried to keep this blog strictly for photos and weddings, but I am finding a lot of photographers also use their blog as an extension of themselves.  Talking about everything and anything.  This year I will make an effort to blog as much as I can even if I don’t have wedding photos to share.  I might share with you some cool things I have found on the internet or even some cool iPhone apps.  You might even hear me rant about hockey, we’ll see I guess.  Also, please ignore my frequent incorrect spelling and grammar.  It’s not that I can’t spell or have bad grammar.  It’s just that sometimes I type so fast and proof read even faster that I miss things.

2009 was an amazing year for JT Images and we got to photograph so many beautiful weddings in Calgary, Edmonton and Banff.  I am happy that it is over, because I have been dying to design a year book of my favorite shots from 2009.  This book could end up being 200 pages since I am going to want to include so much.  It will be an awesome book that I can’t wait to share with clients who come see me.  I also would love to make a few copies of this book and give away a few as prizes for my faithful fans out there.  Is this something you guys would like to see?  Please do tell me!  I’ll think of a contest we can do.

So to ring in the new year, I have updated the galleries on the main wedding website.  If you go look in “their stories” you will see 5 brand new stories.  All the stories are some of my favorites from 2009.  The formula is still the same.  I love showing full weddings so that potential clients (maybe you) the consistency of our coverage.  I don’t want to just show you some of my best shots like everyone else.  Anyone who photographs a ton of weddings will always have some nice shots.  I am giving you a look at most of my shots throughout the whole day.  I hope you enjoy them, it was hard to just pick 5 new stories to share when I could have shared about 20!

There… 2 blog posts in one day!  :)
