It’s no secret, I love doing destination weddings. I mean, who wouldn’t? It’s not about getting paid to go somewhere cool to shoot a wedding. Although I admit it is quite an awesome perk of the job. But for me, it’s about the whole experience. Getting to spend a week with the couple and their friends and family is great. You really develop a bond that you just can’t do with a 10-12 coverage for the day. Also, locations matter a lot to me. You just can’t go wrong when you are in a different location with beautiful surroundings. For me, I really love the Mayan Riviera. The beaches are amazing, the resorts are spectacular and the people are super friendly and always smiling. I also love taking my couples off the resort to really take advantage of the real Mexico to get real destination wedding photos.
Now on to Sheena and David! There was tons of excitement and anticipation leading up to the wedding day. After Sheena had her makeup done, we went to the girls room to photograph them getting ready. When Sheena put on her gorgeous dress she looked absolutely stunning. David, himself, would be totally outdone. He looked sharp, almost like a model from a magazine.
The ceremony location overlooked the ocean. The weather was just perfect and gave us beautifully diffused light all day. As Sheena walked down the aisle with her parents, I turned around and quickly snapped a shot of the boys looking at Sheena. The look on David’s face was priceless as he watched his bride come closer. The ceremony was short and sweet and soon we were all on the beach shooting photos. It got dark fast, as it always does that far south, so we then headed inside to shoot as much as we could before the reception.
It was the next day in Puerto Morelos that we got some really cool backdrops. The day after (actually 2 days after) shoot is always when we get really good photos of the couples. Puerto Morelos is a small fishing village, so when we arrived with 3 photographers (my assistant Ryan and Ashley who I invited to tag along), everyone noticed. I had a few people who thought we were shooting photos for a magazine. We spent a good 2-3 hours in town shooting and getting stuff that is just simply different from the norm. When you hire me to shoot your destination wedding, you won’t get just photos on the beach at the resort. You get the real Mexico, or Jamaica, or where ever your location is.
Congrats Sheena & David. Thank you so much for trusting me with your day. Thank you for loving my work so much and having me spend a week with you guys and your friends/family. I am so thrilled you both love your photos. I know you will enjoy them for decades to come.
