I think this section should be about me.  I love my wife and 2 boys, they are my whole world.  I love my Calgary Flames.  They are almost my whole world.  I am a hockey junkie, good thing games are played during the wedding off season.  I am shoe junkie.  Nike Dunks are my favorites.  I have 2 weiner dogs named Hercules and Ginger.  One wants to meet you, one wants you to leave.  I have travelled to many countries and loved every culture I have experienced.  I want to learn more languages one day, so I can meet new people.  I still haven’t been to South America or Africa.  I fly fish the Bow River to free my mind.  I always release my catch unharmed.  I love Hawai’i because it’s 28 degrees every day of the year.  I scuba dive to escape from reality.  I wish I was a dolphin so I wouldn’t need a tank.  I love snowboarding in fresh powder and catching big air.  I want a hybrid to help save the planet.  I recycle because it’s our duty as citizens of this planet.  I vote because it’s our duty as citizens of this great country.  I karaoke because I think I can sing relatively ok.  I will sing any Spice Girls song.  No need to dare me either.  I wear Diesel jeans because they are the best.  I’m a Mac, because I don’t know what a PC is. I love Big Macs, because they are delicious.  I am on Facebook because everyone else is.

Linda & Vison flew into Cancun from Calgary for their destination wedding with lots of friends and family, including me!  Linda and Vison are family friends and I was more than happy to a part of their wedding day.  I started with the girls prep where it was buzzing with activity.  The room had a gorgeous ocean view that also over looked the pool and ceremony location.  The boys, as usual, didn’t take long to shoot.  Once I was done with the guy prep, I took Vison outside to go find some light and shadows that we can play with.  Before I knew it, I was back in the girls room shooting the final touches on the bride.

During the ceremony the weather took a turn that was pretty much expected; the rain came down pretty hard and the umbrellas were out in full force.  It made for a bit a nervous situation for me and my precious equipment, but I knew it would hold up.

As usual, I took the bride and groom off the resort to get some photos of them in the real Mexico.   The resort was right next to Puerto Morelos, a small quaint fishing village between Cancun and Playa Del Carmen.  We had a good time checking out the and some of the local backdrops.. including a taco restaurant.

Congrats Linda & Vison!!  I had a great time at your wedding and even better time capturing it all.  It was very nice to be at a wedding where I knew most of the guests and wasn’t a total stranger.

I am transitioning to being strictly a destination wedding photographer.

March 25th, 2014

Hey everyone!  I just wanted to let all my faithful fans, followers and potential clients know that I will only be shooting destination weddings from now on.  I will most likely cap the amount of weddings I shoot to 4 per year.  So I guess you are probably wondering why I am doing this.  I […]

Hey everyone!  I just wanted to let all my faithful fans, followers and potential clients know that I will only be shooting destination weddings from now on.  I will most likely cap the amount of weddings I shoot to 4 per year.  So I guess you are probably wondering why I am doing this.  I am currently involved in other ventures with business partners that are requiring more and more of my time.   However, I still LOVE being a wedding photographer.  I still LOVE the responsibility of creating beautiful images that last more than a lifetime for my clients.  And I LOVE destination weddings.

I have photographed over 10 destination weddings in my career and the experience is like no other.  The connections that I make with the friends and family that attend these weddings, last a lifetime.  After all, you have 1 whole week (usually) to connect and get to know everyone.  I am constantly inspired with the strange scenes and locations that I find.  The biggest thing that makes me different than most destination photographers is that I LEAVE the resort to find awesome locations.  The resorts are great and all, but it doesn’t truly reflect the beauty of the country that you have chosen to have your wedding in.

I am a huge culture, history and food lover, so it’s natural for me to want explore.  Do you really want your wedding photos shot at the resort just like everyone else?  After all, most resorts are “wedding mills”.   Or do you want to walk the streets of Playa Del Carmen with me, where the aroma of street tacos tickles your sense of smell?  Do you want to shoot on the cliffs on the northern coast of Maui?  Maybe we can find a mansion under construction in the middle of town far from the resort.   Once when I was in Jamaica and the Dominican Republic, I found a couple sites that were ruins (amazing!). Including an old abandoned beachside restaurant just north of Ocho Rios.  How about we head over to that quaint fishing village on the shores of the Caribbean where no one speaks English?  I have taken this idea of exploring at destination weddings so seriously that I took up Spanish.  I am now fully conversational in Spanish after 5 years.  Trust me, people trip out when they see a Vietnamese Canadian speaking Spanish like a local to the bartender.  When you can speak the local language, you get access to things you never would have gotten.

Another thing that makes me different is that I WILL hangout with your group!  I will party with your group and make everyone my friend!  I am not sure if that is something that you want, but that is who I am.  I am not going to be a hermit and hide in my room all day or ask you to book me at another resort.  I want to be where you, your friends and your family are!

So, if you want a true destination weddings experience with culture reflected in your images, gorgeous photos, an experienced award winning professional and a fun guy to hang out with… I am your man!

Sheena & David | Now Jade Mayan Riviera | Calgary Destination Wedding Photographer

January 3rd, 2014

It’s no secret, I love doing destination weddings.  I mean, who wouldn’t?  It’s not about getting paid to go somewhere cool to shoot a wedding. It’s no secret, I love doing destination weddings.  I mean, who wouldn’t?  It’s not about getting paid to go somewhere cool to shoot a wedding. Although I admit it is quite an awesome perk of the job.  But for me, it’s about the whole experience.  Getting to spend a week with the couple and their friends and family is great.  You really develop a bond that you just can’t do with a 10-12 coverage for the day.  Also, locations matter a lot to me.  You just can’t go wrong when you are in a different location with beautiful surroundings.  For me, I really love the Mayan Riviera.  The beaches are amazing, the resorts are spectacular and the people are super friendly and always smiling.  I also love taking my couples off the resort to really take advantage of the real Mexico to get real destination wedding photos.

Now on to Sheena and David!  There was tons of excitement and anticipation leading up to the wedding day.  After Sheena had her makeup done, we went to the girls room to photograph them getting ready.  When Sheena put on her gorgeous dress she looked absolutely stunning.  David, himself, would be totally outdone.  He looked sharp, almost like a model from a magazine.

The ceremony location overlooked the ocean.  The weather was just perfect and gave us beautifully diffused light all day.  As Sheena walked down the aisle with her parents, I turned around and quickly snapped a shot of the boys looking at Sheena.  The look on David’s face was priceless as he watched his bride come closer.  The ceremony was short and sweet and soon we were all on the beach shooting photos.  It got dark fast, as it always does that far south, so we then headed inside to shoot as much as we could before the reception.

It was the next day in Puerto Morelos that we got some really cool backdrops.  The day after (actually 2 days after) shoot is always when we get really good photos of the couples.  Puerto Morelos is a small fishing village, so when we arrived with 3 photographers (my assistant Ryan and Ashley who I invited to tag along), everyone noticed.  I had a few people who thought we were shooting photos for a magazine.  We spent a good 2-3 hours in town shooting and getting stuff that is just simply different from the norm.  When you hire me to shoot your destination wedding, you won’t get just photos on the beach at the resort.  You get the real Mexico, or Jamaica, or where ever your location is.

Congrats Sheena & David.  Thank you so much for trusting me with your day.  Thank you for loving my work so much and having me spend a week with you guys and your friends/family.  I am so thrilled you both love your photos.  I know you will enjoy them for decades to come.

Introducing Lisa and Peter who’s engagement session I photographed in Calgary’s beautiful Fish Creek Provincial Park.  We had an amazing lovely autumn day.  The sun came out for us in a big way.  After the flood, I have been wanting to shoot photos in Fish Creek.  The destruction left by the Bow River’s power is simply amazing.  It was a great opportunity to use the destruction left by the flood with….. engagement photos!  What else???   That’s what I love to do, put my clients in places they probably shouldn’t be!   These 2 love birds are having a destination wedding next year in Mexico and I can’t wait to find little gems to photograph them in.  Especially when we go out and trash Lisa’s dress!

Shalini & Paul’s Hindu & Sikh Fusion Calgary Wedding Photography.

Shalini & Paul had a crazy 3 day wedding that was full of  love, laughter, energy, music, amazing people and great food.  As you all already know, I LOVE Indian weddings.  Shalini & Paul trusted me with not only photos, but video as well.  So that mean I had to put together a team of talented individuals.  Bao To and Terence Law (from TLAW Photography) helped assist me with the photography and Wayne Yeung (from Imaginemotion) did some amazing cinematography.

Their wedding was the first Hindu Sikh fusion wedding I have shot.  I have shot plenty of Sikh weddings and Hindu weddings, but not at the same time.  On the morning of the first day, I headed to Shalini’s grandparent’s beautiful home for some Hindu ceremonies.  In the evening I had my good friend Bao To cover Shalini’s events while I covered Paul’s crazy Mayaan party.  I can’t say what happened at Shalini’s party but Paul sure got it good from his friends and family.  The smeared him completely and Paul was all yellow by the end of it!

The next day was dedicated to the Sikh wedding ceremony.  On this day my good friend Bao went to see Shalini for her prep, while I saw Paul.  After capturing them getting ready, we all met up the Sikh temple in Springbank, where their traditional ceremony was held.  Once the ceremony was over, we headed to Baker park with the bridal party to do our creatives.  This was when we really got to know their bridal party and all the funny characters.  We had a lot fun hanging out and shooting photos of them.  Soon after, we were headed back to Paul’s parent’s house for the last traditional Sikh ceremony.

We had a day break in between the next event day.  And boy am I glad we had it.  It was great to recharge and get going again for the last day of ceremonies and celebrations.  This time my good buddy Terence came and we all met up the BMO Centre.  The morning started with Shalini’s family by the entrance and Paul’s family on the other end.  Paul came in on horseback to music and dancing.  It was a very cool experience.  There was so much energy in the air!  After the dancing it was time to get to business and begin the traditional Hindu ceremonies.

Terence and I took the whole bridal party downtown and we started at the Bow and used the beautiful sculpture “Wonderland” for our photos.  We were actually allowed inside the Bow (first time for me) to shoot photos as well.  We made our way around the Bow and ended up on the skywalk where we got some more epic photos.  Before the reception, we spent some time with Shalini and Paul as they got ready at the Hotel Art.  They did a whole wardrobe change into their evening attire.  The reception decor was stunning!  The peacock colors they used looked really elegant.  And course there was more music and dancing throughout the evening.

Congrats Shalini and Paul!  It was a fabulous experience working with you guys and meeting all your friends and family.  Thanks for trusting us with your celebrations!

Calgary Wedding Photographer JT Images presents: Julie and Kenny’s wedding at the Kicking Horse Resort in Golden B.C.

Julie and Kenny are lovebirds from Minnesota, whose love and obsession of the mountains, brought them to the Kicking Horse Resort in Golden B.C.  I remember doing my consultation with them while I was Hawaii for another wedding.  When Kenny was telling me about their plans, I couldn’t help but smile and think to myself how much of a contrast their wedding will be to what I was about to do in Maui.  That’s what I really love about my job.  For Julie and Kenny, this was obviously their destination wedding.  And to hire a wedding photography whom they will meet for the first time on their bug day was probably a bit nerve wracking.

On the big day Ryan and I met Kenny and Julie for the first time at the top of Eagle’s Eye Mountain.  It was incredible up there!!  The wedding was small and intimate.  The only guests that came were Kenny’s parents, his brother and sister.  The ceremony was going to be held right at the edge of the mountain with a view that was so magnificent, it would make you feel like you were in heaven.  After everyone had gotten dressed and ready, we asked Kenny and Julie if they wanted to do the first look.  We did the first look in the same location as the ceremony.  I directed Julie to walk up to Kenny while his back was turned.  Our cameras were locked and loaded for what was about to happen.  It was quite the sweet moment as Kenny ran into Julie’s arms, she did a cute little hop that Ryan caught.

After the first viewing we headed down in the gondola to do photos in the area.  We found a little frozen creek bed that was just perfect and romantic.  Once we were done there, we had to head back up to the top for the ceremony.  During the ceremony is when I really discovered the love these 2 really had for each other.  I mean, could tell before obviously, but the ceremony was quite emotionally charged.  A very memorable moment even for me, the photographer.  After their sweet vows to one another, we did more photos on the mountains. Eventually we went into town to look for a different backdrop for the rest of the photo shoot.  We found out Julie had an obsession with elephants.  Kenny joked that, if we could find an elephant in Golden it would be awesome.  Of course I said, well, that is a wish I can not fulfil.  Then lo and behold.  We actually found an elephant in Golden!

Julie…. Kenny…. thanks for trusting Ryan and I on your most special and important day of your lives.  When clients book us, I always know they made the right decision.  Because I know what we can do, how hard we work and professional we are.  I was glad you chose us for your destination wedding, because I knew you wouldn’t regret it and I would give you both something you’d cherish for the rest of your lives.  Congratulations again.  You guys are amazing together.  I will visit MN one day, and you can bet I will ring you up!  I’ll even bring your dad some Tim Horton’s, just in case he didn’t get any on the way out! :)

Shalini & Paul’s Engagement Session by Calgary Engagement Photographers: JT Images

Shalini & Paul getting are married in less than a month.  They wanted to do some engagement photos in locations that were significant to them.  Craft Beer Market was gracious enough to allow us to shoot everywhere in their restaurant.  I am a huge fan of Craft, mainly because I am a huge fan of beer.  Their food is fantastic too!  Now I am an even bigger fan for allowing us to do our session there.  Shal and Paul had their first date here so they were pretty pumped that they got to have their photos done here.  After our shoot at Craft, we headed up to Crescent Heights.

We did a second day of shooting our in Banff, where they got engaged.  We were hoping for a sunny warm day but we got the opposite.  But, you know…. it worked out probably even better!!
